Roguelike (Binding of Isaac)
2011 Action Roguelike — Top-down procedural dungeon crawler with room-by-room combat, passive item synergies, treasure/shop/boss room distribution, permadeath with meta-unlock progression. The game that defined modern roguelikes — and one of Steam's most-played indie titles.
Room Grid & Basic Combat
Concept: A grid-based room map where each cell is a room. Player fires projectiles in 4/8 directions, enemies spawn in rooms. Doors open on room clear. Tile-based collision.
Procedural Room Generation
Concept: Generate room layouts from hand-authored room templates. Assign room types (normal, treasure, shop, boss, secret). Place doors on north/south/east/west walls. Reroll protection for uncompletable layouts.
Items & Pickups
Concept: Passive items that modify player stats (damage up, fire rate, range, speed). Active items with cooldowns. Health pickups (red hearts, soul hearts). Key and bomb consumables. Item pedestals in treasure rooms.
Enemy Variety & Bosses
Concept: 5+ enemy types with distinct movement patterns (chaser, shooter, flyer, burrower, splitter). Boss room at the end of each floor. Boss has multi-phase attack patterns. Floor transitions with increasing difficulty.
Floor Progression & Map
Concept: Multi-floor dungeon with increasing depth. Basement → Caves → Depths. Floor map shown at start with room outlines. Secret room detection logic. Shop with purchasable items using coins.
Meta-Progression & Characters
Concept: Unlockable characters with different starting stats/items (Isaac, Magdalene, Cain, ???). Global unlock system — complete certain challenges to unlock new items for future runs. Stat tracking over multiple runs.
